Biography

scar Acosta was awarded a Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering in 1995 and subsequently a Master of Sciences degree in 1997 by the University of Andes in Bogotá , Colombia . In 1997, he proceeded to Brest, France for a seven–month internship with the LATIM Laboratory at the ENSTB, where he worked on retina image registration. In 1999, he was awarded a PhD scholarship, under a cooperation program between European and Latin American Institutes (ALFA BETA Biomedical Engineering Training Action), which took him back to France, this time to the LTSI-INSERM U642 at the University of Rennes I. The main areas of his research were: Planning of Minimally Invasive Procedures, Surgical Simulation (Transluminal Angioplasty, Stenting for Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm, Brachytherapty), Computer Assisted Surgery, Virtual Angioscopy and Geometrical Modelling of Vascular Structures.

In 2005, Oscar joined CSIRO as Postdoctoral Fellow, based first at Westmead Hospital in Sydney (where he undertook the segmentation of paediatric CT images) and then at the e-Health Research Centre in Brisbane where the focus of his research was medical image processing: restoration of Trans-rectal Ultrasound Images for the planning and computer-assisted treatment of Prostate Cancer, as well as for the study of Alzheimer’s Disease. Currently he is a Research Scientist at e-Health Research Centre and is working mainly in the study of Alzheimer’s disease using multimodality images.
