Chinese Sheng
For more than 10 years, under the expert eyes and ears of
Wang Zheng Ting, I
studied the intricate art of playing the Chinese
Sheng (Mouth Organ). Before moving to Sydney, I was a
member of the Chaofeng
Chinese Orchestra, and also was a founding member and
Treasurer of the Melbourne Philharmonic Chinese Orchestra.
As the lead Sheng player in both of these groups, I played
at many local, interstate and overseas venues, including two
performing trips to Taiwan, and tours of Singapore and China.
Since moving to Sydney, I haven't found as much time to play
my Sheng. I have, however, remained in contact with the Melbourne
Philharmonic Chinese Orchestra, and most recently returned
to Melbourne to play at their official launch concert in August
2004.
I'm still interested in potentially starting a group in
Sydney. If you know of any musicians in Sydney who play a
Chinese musical instrument, please let
me know. I'd love to start up even a small group of interested
people.
