Biography
After doing the final project of my MSc, on the design of a body-powered hand prosthesis, at the Delft University of Technology, I did my PhD at that university as well. Topic of research was the interaction between bowel tissue and graspers used in laparoscopic (key-hole) surgery. I then became a postdoctoral research fellow at the Queensland University of Technology, working on biomechanical modelling of the lumbar spine using Magnetic Resonance Imaging. I stayed at QUT as a research fellow to develop an image analysis user interface to create patient-specific finite element models of scoliotic spine surgery and as a research consultant performing biomechanical analysis of spinal fusions. In 2007 I joined the CSIRO Australian e-Health Research Centre as a research scientist in the Surgical Simulation & Planning team.
